bio

Steven Shen, a senior at Lubbock High School, began his journey with pickleball during the summer of 2023. Having previous tennis experience, he was immediately drawn to pickleball and began playing for fun with his friends. Later during the school year, he joined together with Silas and Matthew to start a pickleball club at school and eventually create Pickle Pals.

As a certified Elite Learning Academy Volunteer, Steven understands the importance of raising a younger generation. The Elite Learning Academy, a local daycare in downtown Lubbock, has given Steven a new realization of what it means to properly care for youthful individuals. He has over 150 hours of experience at the daycare and is co-head of the after-school department. His work with the Elite Learning Academy is one of the main reasons he supports Pickle Pals with determination and vigor: he knows that kids, adolescents, and teenagers are in their developing phases and that they often need guidance and support to navigate their lives.

Outside of pickle pals

Even though Steven dedicates a lot of time to pickleball-related activities, he is also a Robin’s Nest Tutor and has a passion for teaching and mentoring younger kids.

Coming from a family who stresses the importance of academics, Steven believes that school can often play an important role in shaping the trajectory of peoples’ lives. Knowing that many come from less fortunate families, one of Steven’s goals is to spread education to younger minds who are hungry for knowledge. If you’re ever checking out a book at Godeke library, you might catch him tutoring at the front table.
